If You Like Books review: The Crown of Embers by Rae Carson

If you like: quests * magic * female protagonists

The Crown of Embers is the sequel to The Girl of Fire and Thorns (see my review here), and shows Elisa’s continued growth as ruler of her kingdom. The threats on her life have not lessened since she harnessed the power of her godstone and defeated the Invierne invaders. She also must continue to work towards finding and completing her mission from God. Balancing these two responsibilities leads her on a secret journey to the south of her lands,
in the hopes of solving a holy mystery and obtaining the power she needs to protect her people.

First Day on Earth by Cecil Castellucci

If you like: aliens * misfits * discovery

In First Day on Earth, Mal struggles to find his place as he deals with a father who abandoned him and the mental stress of an alien abduction in his past. He meets Hooper at an abductee support group. Hooper confides that he is an alien and needs Mal’s help to rendezvous with an alien ship that can take him home. Having never fit in, Mal hopes to join Hooper on his journey. Along the way Mal discovers there might be a few people on Earth worth sticking around for, and questions his own reasons for wanting to leave.

If You Like Books review: Under the Never Sky by Veronica Rossi

If you like: dystopia * corruption * enhanced abilities

Under the Never Sky is a dystopian future where Aether storms are turning the environment into a violent and dangerous place. Privileged people have fled to secure Pods where they can live without ever interacting with the outside world. Outside the Pod barriers, those who remain have evolved with the planet. They interact differently with the world that many would imagine possible. When Aria is forced into the outside, she discovers that it may be safer than inside the walls.
